ICNS File Definition

ICNS files, also known as Apple icon image format, or .icns, is an icon format that is used for Apple Inc.'s operating system, commonly referred to as MAC, or MAC OS X. Like it's ICO counterpart, ICNS has a standard icon size format of 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128, 256x256, and 512x512 square pixels. Obviously the later two giant icon sizes aren't used often, and thus you will usually not find icons available within that size range. The ICNS supports a wide array of color and image compression ratios, allowing a designer or graphics user to fine tune the image output. The file also supports varied image states, for example like a trash bin showing empty or full, or an individual file folder showing as open or closed. As you'll notice, most of our icons are available in MAC format, as the operating system has an extremely large user base. If you have any further questions about the MAC compatible file type, or MAC icons, then please send us an email, or leave a comment below.
